The only real reason to become a Christian, or as some say, to convert to Christianity, is because you believe with all of your heart that God exists, that his Word—the Bible—is true, and that Jesus Christ is who he says he is: "I am the way and the truth and the life." (John NIV).   I am a depressed Christian. I don’t mean that in the identity sense, like vegans, Crossfitters, and people who don’t own a television. I mean I’m a Christian who has dealt with depression and anxiety in various forms for many years. It’s part of who I am, woven into my DNA and traceable in bleak lines throughout my family tree.

How can anyone honestly still be a Christian, after knowing what’s really in the Bible, the unspeakable pain and suffering the God of the Bible purposely created and allows, and the fact that it’s just an ancient book with no outside supporting evidence to confirm any major claim it makes? Why are you still a Christian?   In the end, it is idolatry. I am looking to something other than God to meet my needs and satisfy my desires. These gods promise joy, but they deliver misery. That is why a half-hearted Christian cannot have ongoing joy in Christ. David says, The sorrows of those who run after another god shall multiply. (Psalm ) And again.

Spiritual growth is the result of the Holy Spirit changing a Christian over time and a Christian “working out their salvation” (Philippians 2;). 1 John will help you understand if you are a new Christian, a father of the father, or somewhere in between. It is an “Am I a Christian?” quiz. Accurate results require honesty. Inthe famed British philosopher Bertrand Russell wrote an essay entitled, “Why I Am Not a Christian.” Russell’s essay inspired the title of this post. By “Christian,” I mean someone who has trusted their life to Jesus Christ as Crucified Savior. I am a Christian because on the many Sundays when I sat in church and woolgathered, when I have sat mostly spaced out or bored, indifferent to or in rebellion against the sermon and the prayers—the Eucharist still somehow feeds my hungry self—the Eucharist being that piece of bread in which, as St.

Francis noted, Jesus hides for our salvation. About Why I am Still a Christian Hans Küng () is one of the most distinguished and widely-acclaimed theologians of the twentieth century.

Edinburgh: T. & T. Clark, (OCoLC) Online version. People have asked me why I am still a Christian after coming out of my cultic sub-culture of Christianity. It’s a good question, and one I have been rethinking yet again the last couple of days.

Honestly, the decade I spent in my fundamental, legalistic version of Christianity isn’t the only time I have been hurt by Christians. Beginning with the topics of moral relativism and knowable truth, the book progresses to questions about belief in God, the reliability of the Bible, and the identity of Jesus as the Messiah, the Son of God. Now, since I am having a conversation with you rather than writing a book, let me come back to the Big Question.
